UPS Raises 2026 Outlook on Stronger Profitability

Chief financial officer Brian Dykes raised full-year revenue guidance to approximately $92.6 billion, with adjusted operating profit projected at $8.75 billion and adjusted earnings of $7.28 per share.

For the fourth quarter, UPS expects revenues of approximately $25.7 billion and adjusted operating profit of $3.3 billion.
Management anticipates domestic revenues to rise about 3%, with a 10.5% operating margin. International revenues are projected to grow approximately 7%, with margins near 20%.

UPS Domestic Margins Improve Despite Volume Declines

Dykes highlighted improving domestic profitability despite a 3.3% year-over-year decline in average daily volume, reflecting deliberate reductions in Amazon shipments.

Domestic revenue increased 4.5%, supported by 6.1% growth in revenue per piece. Adjusted operating margin expanded 60 basis points to 7%, while adjusted operating profit increased 14.3%.

During the analyst discussion, Wolfe Research questioned the potential for sustained margin expansion. CEO Carol Tomé emphasized gradual annual improvements rather than an immediate return to double-digit domestic margins.

UPS Sees International Recovery Supporting Margins

International operations returned to year-over-year adjusted operating profit growth after six quarters, generating $746 million in operating profit and a 14.9% margin.

Dykes attributed improved profitability to stronger revenue quality and favorable geographic mix. International revenue per piece increased 15%, partly reflecting higher fuel surcharges.

During the discussion, Bank of America questioned the sustainability of international margin improvement. Management identified recovering U.S. inbound shipments and Asia-to-Asia trade as favorable developments, while indicating mid-to-high-teens margins as an appropriate longer-term range.

UPS Targets Premium Customers and Healthcare Growth

Tomé identified healthcare, small and medium-sized businesses and high-technology logistics as central growth priorities.

Healthcare revenue exceeded $3 billion for the third consecutive quarter. SMBs represented a record 35.1% of domestic package volume, while SMB average daily volume increased 3.7%.

During questioning from Wells Fargo, Tomé highlighted improving customer retention and premium market opportunities. She identified a $535 billion global premium addressable market, including approximately $150 billion in the United States.

UPS Cost Reductions Support Cash Flow Expectations

Dykes raised the full-year adjusted free cash flow outlook to approximately $6.1 billion, reflecting stronger operating performance and pension funding decisions.

Management reaffirmed its expectation of nearly $3 billion in annual benefits from network restructuring and efficiency initiatives, with approximately $1.8 billion achieved through September.

During questioning from Citigroup, Dykes explained that the completion of Driver Choice payments should support cash flow in 2027. Tomé reaffirmed management's confidence in dividend sustainability.

UPS Prepares Automated Network for Holiday Demand

Tomé expects domestic average daily volume to increase approximately 25% sequentially during the fourth quarter, although total volume should remain below last year's level.

Nearly 70% of packages are expected to move through automated processes during peak season, reducing reliance on temporary transportation capacity.

Chief global operations officer Nando Cesarone emphasized expanding RFID technology and standardizing operating practices globally. Management expects these initiatives to support productivity and future margin improvement.

UPS Management Emphasizes Sustainable Growth

Tomé characterized recent results as evidence that prioritizing higher-quality shipments over total volume is improving business fundamentals.

Management expects underlying customer growth, operating efficiencies and premium services to support further profitability improvements, while Amazon-related volume comparisons remain a headwind into 2027.
